Get Some links And Get Your Website Indexed
Small Biz Domination – Part 22
You might think that when you put your website online, Google and the other search engines just come along and find it. If only it was just that simple. Having said that, it’s not too difficult to get your website indexed when you know how.
As Google are the most used search engine by a long way, I will refer to Google from now on, rather than the search engines. They all have similar traits but if you are going to target one, it’s better to target the biggest.
If Google doesn’t know of your websites existence, it won’t show up in the search results at all. You can submit your website to Google but there is no guarantee that you will get your website indexed. To me, this just seems like a waste of time and there are better ways to go about getting your website indexed quickly.
The best way to get a website indexed quickly is to find a busy website and get a link back to your website placed on it. A busy and regularly updated website will be crawled regularly by google and your link will be found and hopefully followed.
I won’t go too deep into search engine spiders (software that crawls websites) for the sake of not writing an epic post. All you really need to know is that this software endlessly runs around the web visiting websites. It crawls the pages of the websites and follows the outgoing links to other websites. It then crawls those websites follows the links and so on.
Where To Get Your First link & Get Your Website Indexed
There are loads of places to get a link quickly and easily but we want a busy website and I have my favourite for this purpose. I use a service called UK Link Exchange. This is a website where you can find other webmasters who are actively looking for other webmasters who want to exchange links.
I’m going to walk you through the process with a video in just a moment but first there are a couple of things to note.
- By joining UK Link Exchange you will get a link direct from them if you link to them. This is your link from a busy website that will get your website indexed quickly.
- You will want to set up a links page or post on your website to place other members links on. It’s a you add my link and I’ll add yours deal.
- Links like this are called reciprocal links. They are not just inbound because you are linking back to them.
- The links that you get will most likely be generally poor quality. Just do enough to fill your page and then drop it from your strategy. You are only looking to get off to a start with these and to get your website indexed quickly.
- Do your best to get links from related but not competitive websites. If you are a kitchen fitter, do exchanges with other trades but avoid kitchen websites unless they are in a far away location. If they are, exchange with them because they are very relevant. Be fussy, it’s not a race.
- It’s easy to get comfortable doing exchanges and nothing else. Carry on linking like this and using only one exchange and you will create something known as a link family. This will do your website damage.
- Note these points and you will be just fine.

The Sandbox Effect
When your website is new, you must take care not to get too many links too quickly. Getting links too fast will look un-natural and the result could be that your website disappears from the search engine results completely.
This can take months to recover from so please do not rush the link building process. Ultimately you want to get a diverse range of links from different sources and you want them to appear as links that you have gained naturally through popularity.

Hi Steve,
Just stopped by to check your video after reading your post on Paul Wolfe’s site about your videos.
I think you are doing great. Your audio is clear and video looks good, I understood the lesson. Very professional. Like your accent
I did find the video a little long but its all good.
Now you just have to get yourself on camera
Great job
Cheers

Hi Karim.
It’s great that you found my link at Paul’s site. Thank’s for taking the time to come over and give me some feedback.
As you read my comment on Paul’s post, you will know that I’m not a huge fan of recording and hearing my own voice.
Something that I will get used to in time I guess.
Thank’s again for your feedback. Hope you can join us here again.

Hi Steve
Thanks for the excellent tutorial and video on link building. I am new to this and although I am currently on page 1 of Google for my niche, I can’t seem to get any higher than number 5.
This I assume is because of the low number and quality of links to my site and the fact it has only been live for around 2 months. It was always my intention to ‘play by the rules’ and not try to build ranking short term but get there by content as well as link building.
I have joined UK Link Exchange and hopefully can add some decent links over time.

Hi Bill.
Thank’s for the feedback. I’m not a great lover of recording screencasts so your positive feedback helps the old confidence a lot.
Bill I hope you don’t think I’m poking my nose in but I took the liberty of having a quick look at your site’s SEO.
You seem to have a handle on things but surprisingly the competition is a bit stronger than I would have expected for your niche.
Just a suggestion but I would recommend that you have a look at these posts.

The main problem that I see you facing is 3 pages from a dot gov website are holding the top 3 positions. It may be worth contacting them and asking for a link on one or more of these pages. They are all related and at worst they will say no.
I also noticed that you have a book for sale. Assuming that this is your own work, I would recommend exploring setting up on an affiliate program like Amazon or Clickbank to promote it (if you have not already done so).
You could then contact all of the major UK walking/rambling blogs and give an incentive for them to promote it too.
As I said Bill, hope you don’t think I’m giving advice where it isn’t wanted but I can see ranking being a struggle with these dot gov pages holding the top three positions.
If you would like a heads up on the affiliate programs, drop me an email and maybe we could have a brief chat on the phone or Skype. I would be happy to help to point a fellow walker/climber in the right direction if you are new to internet marketing.

Hi Steve
Thanks for the input, it’s appreciated. Just to put you in the picture of what I am about – I am retired, so earning isn’t a priority. I am involved in IM more as an interest than for financial gain. Having said that, any income wouldn’t be turned down.
With reference to your excellent posts, I have been involved in IM for the last couple of years and actually bought Market Samurai for
keyword research purposes. I wrote 3 ebooks on another micro niche before doing the research and unfortunately they didn’t sell.
The research on my current project showed a small number of Google seaches, as I expected from a limited local market but it was a subject that I was passionate about, so I decided to go ahead on the basis that it would have limited potential.
I can live with that and although the walking books are selling, I appreciate what you are saying about the competition on page 1. I have actually had a site review published from the local online council publication, so that should be a decent backlink.
Regarding affiliates, I did think about this but with it being of such a limited local appeal, I didn’t think this was a route worth pursuing.
I shall continue to build backlinks and make the site content rich and hopefully in time climb a little higher on page 1. Many thanks for your advice Steve and I will become a regular reader of your informative posts.

Hi Bill.
Glad you took it as I intended and not as me poking my nose in.
Not sure that I entirely agree that your book has limited appeal. As an ex rock climber, I know plenty of people down here in the South that buy guidebooks for climbing all over the country.
Having said that, I can’t claim to know too much about the walking and rambling community.
I’m really pleased to hear that you will be visiting my blog regularly. There’s a lot more to come that you may find helpful.
Just one final tip, make use of keywordluv when you comment here. I have no objection to that. Have adjusted your comment for you this time.
Thank’s again for your input and kind words.

Hi John.
You are right. My stats show that over 92% of search engine traffic to this blog comes from Google. The other 8% is spread accross all other search engines. If I’m correct, official stats say that Google has about a 75% share. Having spoken to others with similar results to me, I would not be surprised if it was higher.
Hello Steve. Although I’m not from UK, I find your post very informative and helpful especially to us newbie website owners. Thanks for the reminder not to rush in the link building process. I hope my site gets a place in the first page at its niche in the future.
Hi again Gabriel.
Hopefully you will get ranked for terms like “car locksmith” and “auto locksmith” but these are quite broad terms. If you operate at a local level, you may find it easier to rank for terms like “car locksmith(s) location”.
If you go back to the case study in Local Biz Domination, you will see that our locksmith targets terms like “mobile locksmith Eltham” and “locksmiths Eltham”, plus several other local areas.
These are much less competetive terms and will likely be very easy to get ranked for. They are also very focused on the business, ie, if someone searches “locksmith Elthan”, there’s a pretty good chance that they are looking for a locksmith in Eltham.
Hope this is helpful and thank’s again for sharing your thoughts.
